PROMO STARTS 17th FEBRUARY 2023
It's hard to believe that it was 44 years ago that the first recording was confirmed which gave birth to TER Records (later joined by JAY Records) as an extension of the shop That’s Entertainment Records, in Covent Garden, London. From that very first modest recording of NASHVILLE, NEW YORK Original 1979 London Cast of the King’s Head Theatre production to the latest, PENELOPE Original Off Broadway Cast of The York Theatre, New York production, the company grew to be recognized as one of the most unique and important Record Labels for the propagation and preservation of the legacy of the Musical Theatre. The intervening years have seen more that 770 albums pass through the doors with many more being licensed to other labels including all the major labels, BMG, Sony, EMI etc. and even more unlikely outfits such as the Ministry of Sound!
Unbelievably it was this independent English Record Company that took it upon itself to record and preserve the only recordings of the Complete Score (and sometimes the entire Play) of such iconic and important Broadway Musicals as ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, PACIFIC OVERTURES, CABARET, MY FAIR LADY, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, LADY IN THE DARK, MAN OF LA MANCHA, 42nd STREET, 110 IN THE SHADE, WEST SIDE STORY, GUYS AND DOLLS, THE STUDENT PRINCE, NINE, THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, SHOW BOAT and the British Musicals THE DANCING YEARS, THE HIRED MAN, BITTER SWEET the list goes on for more than 50 other musicals. Several more are already recorded and awaiting completion of mixes and release such as THE MUSIC MAN, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, BRIGADOON, HAIR and THE FANTASTICKS.
This enormous undertaking would not have been possible without the unswerving belief and support of the Authors, Stars, Publishers, Agents, Lawyers and our loyal family of supporters amongst you (thank you all). The likes of Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, John Kander/Fred Ebb, Alan Jay Lerner, Judi Dench, Jonathan Pryce, Barry Bostwick, Ron Raines, Louis Quilico, Christopher Lee, Valerie Masterson, Brian Cox, Glenn Close, Jo Loesser, Flora Roberts, Sam Cohn and others, saw and understood what I was doing and my desire to record and preserve the legacies of their Masterworks and performances for posterity. They all offered their complete support and blessings unreservedly for all the recordings that involved them and assisted in the often complicated, lengthy negotiations which ensue to obtain the rights to record the Original Orchestrations and in their Complete form of all the Musical Masterworks.
Many authors and owners realised that with each new production on Broadway and the West End, their Original Masterworks were being changed beyond recognition with re-writes, re-orchestrations, updates, gender swapping and more. They understood that the original Masterworks will almost certainly never be seen or heard again in their completeness as they were first presented to the World, excepting in the odd concert performances and in stock and amateur productions (which would undoubtedly be cut and adapted, especially the Dance Music, Underscoring and some Reprises. Even the productions by the Lincoln Center were presented with cuts, some re-writes and new Music). They saw that JAY’s Complete Recordings would preserve their Original Masterworks for posterity and that the recordings would be the only true representations of their Masterwork, Complete and in the original versions and become incredibly supportive and embracing of JAY’s Complete Recordings.
We are marching into 2023 with determination and zest however, the realities of the recorded music industry dictates change and all labels must constantly adapt. We have been fervent supporters of the CD format with it's superior uncompressed format, if only to serve our supporters who are still keen to add CDs to their collections. We resisted Digital Streaming Platforms and hoped that there was enough support of the CDs for us to continue with our CD release policies indefinitely. The last few years though have forced us to acknowledge that the audience for the CD format is declining which led the decision to upload our entire catalogue onto a range of Digital Streaming Platforms last year. Support for CDs may have reached at a level that makes it difficult for us to commercially maintain releases in the same way as we had historically and the label will have to adapt.
For now though, rather than abandoning the CD format altogether and in order to continue serving those devotees of the CD format (which still offers the best uncompressed formats for quality we believe), it may be necessary to increase the cost of CDs to justify the increased costs of producing them in the face of declining sales. We will continue to service the better selling titles with Disc on Demand CDs as and when the manufactured CDs get sold out. We will most likely implement this new pricing policy from mid March 2023.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS ....
