Music by
Arthur Sullivan
Libretto by
W.S.Gilbert
The New Sadler’s Wells Opera Company
This is the first complete recording of the original version of this most popular opera of Gilbert and Sullivan Operas. It was performed by the original cast of the New Sadler’s Wells Opera production as directed by award winning Ian Judge. The New Sadler’s Wells Opera production was conducted by Simon Phipps and was based on a critical edition by Dr.David Hulme from the composer’s authograph.
The release compliments the previous JAY releases of HMS PINAFORE, THE MIKADO and THE OPERAS THAT GOT AWAY / Sir Arthur Sullivan. As with the other recordings, the casting is of the highest calibre and of seasoned Gilbert and Sullivan performers such as Gordon Sandison, Harold Innocent, John Ayldon, Thomas Lawlor, Marilyn Hill Smith, Linda Ormiston and Joan Davis.
All the favourite music are highlighted in this recording; FAIR IS ROSE, IF SOMEBODY CHANCED TO BE, FROM THE BRINY SEA, CHEERILY CAROLS THE LARK, HAPPILY COUPLED ARE WE, WHEN THE NIGHT WIND HOWLS, MY EYES ARE FULLY OPEN,and THERE GREW A LITTLE FLOWER.
This recording, together with JAY’s HMS PINAFORE are the chosen recommended versions by both The Penquin Best Classical CD Guide and The Gramophone Good Classical CD Guide. It also won the prestigious MRA award for excellence
